Gor Mahia 1-1 GFE 105 (2-4 pens.): K’Ogalo knocked out of GOtv Shield contest
The lower Division side made Gor Mahia their second biggest victims after having edged out KRA another KPL side also on post-match penalties.
Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia were dumped out of GOtv Shield tournament after going down on penalties to GFE 105 at Kisumu City Stadium on Saturday.
The lower Division side made Gor Mahia their second biggest victim after having edged out KRA another KPL side also on post-match penalties. The match ended 1-1 in full time and had to go for penalties where the winners scored all their penalty kicks while Gor Mahia scored just two.
Second half substitute Simon Mburu scored for Gor Mahia in the 82nd minute ending a frustrating moment for the league champions before Dennis Shiveka equalised on the death. Mburu had come on for Patrick Oboya at the hour mark and 14 minutes later scored the opener.
The 84th minute goal lighted up the newly refurbished Kisumu Stadium where fans had thronged to watch their most favorite team. However, they were disappointed when Shiveka netted the equaliser. Thousands of fans turned up to watch this high profile fixture as football returned to Kisumu Stadium after more than a decade.
They remained expectant and frustrated at the same time for more than 80 minutes before Mburu's opener. In the penalty shootout Dennis Shiveka, Hesborne Ochieng, Sammy Kiptoo and Duke Obuya scored.
Gor Mahia scored through Eric Ochieng and Haron Shakava while Simon Mburu and Musa Mohammed missed to score. In another match played at Moi Stadium, Agro-chemicals edged out Nairobi Stima 1-0 to make it to the next round of the competition.
Goal poacher Michael Musyoka capitalised on a defensive lapse to score past, John Oyemba in the Stima goal after just four minutes. Stima nearly bounced back but Nicholas Ochieng’s header from a corner kick failed to find its target.
Agro should have made it two goals in the 24th minute but John Oyemba in the Stima goal came out quickly to clear James Omondi's danger. At Ruaraka Stadium, KPL side Ulinzi Stars thrashed Division One side Mumbi Nationale 6-0.
Steven Waruru, Evans Amuoka and goalkeeper James Saruni scored a brace each for the soldiers. The soldiers needed just two minutes to open scores through Steven Waruru, who finished off John Nairuka’s pass by slotting home past Tom Kangeta in Mumbi goal.
The second goal came 15 minutes later when Ulinzi goalkeeper James Saruni stepped up to score from penalty spot. A double by Evans Amuoka in 26th minute and 36th minute killed off the losers, who looked subdued at this point.
Four minutes later Waruru completed his brace as the soldiers went for the break leading 5-0. At the same venue, Nairobi University Wazito FC upset KPL side Nairobi City Stars 2-1. The winners are handled by former international Frankline Obare.
