Ghana face Fifa sanction over government probe
Ghana could face the wrath of the world’s football governing body after the government announced a three-member commission to probe into the activities of the national team.
Fifa has written to the Ghana FA over government’s move to investigate the Black Stars’ poor performance and other off-pitch events at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
The Ghana government has set up a three-member Commission of Inquiry with the powers of a high court to look into all activities surrounding the country’s participation at the global showpiece.
The world’s football governing body says the “composition and competences of the said Commission” set up by the Ghana government “are unclear” and needs clarification.
“We have learnt from media reports that the Presidency of the Republic of Ghana has appointed a Committee of Enquiry and Investigation into the Black Stars’ participation to the 2014 FIFA World cup in Brazil,” deputy general secretary of Fifa Markus Kattner wrote in a letter.
“The composition and the competences of the said Commission are unclear. Provided the reports are true we deem it important to clarify from the beginning the procedures and to ensure that the GFA can operate without interference as required by FIFA statutes. Under this circumstance we kindly ask you to provide us with a report at your earliest convenience.”
The Commission which was initially set up as a Committee by president John Dramani Mahama is headed by an Appeal’s Court judge, Justice Senyo Dzamefe, with sports administrator, Moses Foh Amoaning and Kofi Anokye Darko as members.
The four-time African champions failed to make it out of the group stages and had their campaign blighted by several off-field incidents such as appearance fee row, fighting in camp between players and officials among others.
