The games will involve university students
representing different nations from Africa featuring in all games.
Participating teams will be nations and not individual universities.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Local
Organizing Committee (LOC) at the University of Nairobi, the Secretary
General of FASU, Penina Aligawesa Kabenge, informed the Local Organizing
Committee that several countries among them Uganda, Kenya, Namibia,
South Africa, Sierra Leone, Zambia have confirmed participation in the
games and more are expected in due course. FASU Vice-President Prof.
Jacob Nteere, also briefed the LOC on its expectations.
The games will be staged at the University of
Nairobi Sports grounds with a few track events and swimming to be held
at the Safaricom Kasarani Stadium.
The LOC’s main task is to mobilize resources and
sponsorship for the games and manage all the logistics related to the
fete. The LOC is headed by the University of Nairobi, Deputy
Vice-Chancellor, Student Affairs, Prof. Isaac Mbeche and includes among
others; Kenya Universities Sports Association (KUSA) officials led by
the Chairman, Mr. Mbaabu Mureiithi and key University of Nairobi
managers and staff. The committee will give regular updates via
different media to all the stakeholders.
The first edition of All Africa Universities games
were held in 1974 in Accra, Ghana and the University of Nairobi hosted
them in 1978. The 6th edition of the games was held in 2012 in Windhoek, Namibia.
