Campbell: Black ex-pros too scared to talk about racism

Campbell: Black ex-pros too scared to talk about racism

The former centre-back has previously claimed he was prevented from captaining England due to the colour of his skin and is disappointed by the lack of support for his opinions.

Former England centre-back Sol Campbell believes black players are "too scared" to openly talk about racism in football.

Campbell claimed in March that he could have been captain of his country for 10 years had he been white, which was met with scepticism by some, including Paul Ince who captained England in June 1993.

The 39-year-old now feels that some black ex-professionals are afraid to speak out about racial abuse, and he is disappointed by the lack of support for his opinions.

"They are seeing what is happening around them and they don't do anything about it. They love the status quo. They just want to toe the line," Campbell said at the opening of the Black Cultural Archive in London.

"It's a case of 'I'm all right, I don't care who is coming up behind me. I'm too scared to own up'. Well, I'm not like that and I am never going to be like that, I'm just going to be me.

"People could have said what they did in a different way. John Barnes had bananas thrown at him. He is almost acting like nothing happened to him. People like him could have said, 'maybe not 10 years, but I could see where he was coming from. Articulate it in a different way.'"

On Ince, he added: "Then you've got Paul Ince [speaking] in the Daily Mail. It's like: 'Really?!' What position are you protecting when your position can so easily be taken away?

"I know some of the political people are trying to kind of move the FA [Football Association] in certain ways.

"But you just get to the stage where, if I've got black ex-players going against me then you start to think: 'What is going on here? I'll just let people drift and carry on doing my own thing.'"

Kaizer Chiefs 0-0 Orlando Pirates (5-6 pen.): Penalties let AmaKhosi down

Kaizer Chiefs 0-0 Orlando Pirates (5-6 pen.): Penalties let AmaKhosi down

Orlando Pirates edged Kaizer Chiefs 6-5 on penalty shoot-outs in a tense Carling Black Label Cup match, played at the FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon

Kaizer Chiefs came into this year's edition of the Carlig Black Label Cup as defending champions having lifted the trophy this time last year, thanks to Lehlohonolo Majoro's controversial goal.

Orlando Pirates on the other hand, were looking for revenge over their fierce rivals while also eyeing this Cup for a record third time, having won the first two editions.

AmaKhosi had a brighter start to the game as their first attempt at goal from outside the box was deflected for a corner inside the opening 60 seconds of the game.

Katlego Mphela had a chance to at least force a save out of Senzo Meyiwa from a set-piece in the 18th minute, after Kingston Nkhatha was fouled by the Pirates keeper on the edge of the box, but his attempt went over the crossbar.

Nkhatha was subsequently replaced by Siphelele Mthembu as AmaKhosi's technical team looked to keep up the pressure on their opponents by sticking to their formation.

The Buccaneers had a few attempts on goal, but nothing too serious to get the ball behind Itumeleng Khune and into the back of the net.

Happy Jele should have at least hit the target from inside the six-yard box after brilliantly connecting with Daine Klate's free-kick, but the Bucs defender's header sailed over the top.

Jele again got himself in a good position, this time capitalising from Chiefs' sloppy defending after they failed to clear the ball inside their own box following Khune's save, but the 27-year-old guided his shot wide with his right boot, five minutes from the interval.

The last chance of the game fell to Chiefs as Pirates failed to deal with Mthembu's poorly taken cross just before the break, but Mphela misread the cross and was unable to take full advantage.

Willard Katsande fired with his weaker foot from distance three minutes after the restart, but Meyiwa put his body behind the ball to make a fine save that resulted in a corner.

Chiefs then failed to take the lead in the 65th minute after being given a penalty, following a foul on George Lebese inside the box. George Maluleka stepped up and sent his spot-kick onto the crossbar to the relief of Pirates fans out in the stands.

Pirates looked the better side from then onwards, especially in the middle of the park where Issa Sarr and Oupa Manyisa were operating, but they couldn't trouble Khune.

Thabo Matlaba tried to beat Khune with a long range shot, but the Chiefs skipper was equal to the task. It was then clear that only penalties would determine the outcome of the match.

Mandla Masango took the first penalty and easily beat Meyiwa with a cheeky chip, but Lennox Bacela made it 1-1 with fine finish.

Maluleka saw his second penalty of the day hit the crossbar for the second time in similar fashion.

Josta Dladla brought Chiefs back to level terms, before Siyabonga Sangweni had his penalty struck over the bar. Lebese restored AmaKhosi's advantage with a fine goal, but Mpho Makola brilliantly placed his penalty into the top corner to make it 3-3.

Katsande stepped up to take the fifth penalty and he calmly slotted home, but Pirates refused to give in as Sarr made it 4-4. Eric Mathoho sent his penalty way over the bar but Khune came to the rescue, denying Seanego Masalaelo with a fine stop.

Mthembu restored Chiefs' lead, sending Meyiwa the wrong way, but Thandani Ntshumayelo made it 5-5 in fine style. Tefu Mashamaite had his penalty saved but Khune again came to the rescue, this time denying Rooi Mahamutsa.

Siboniso Gaxa failed to hit the back of the net, and Matlaba made no mistake with a fine finish to hand Pirates their third Carling Black Label Cup.

Knicks waive another one of Phil Jackson’s former Lakers

Golden State Warriors v New York KnicksThe Knicks bid to become the Lakers of the  East has hit another roadblock.
In the last five months, New York has waived three of Phil Jackson’s former players from Los Angeles:
Maybe New York will add a fourth player to the list by signing – and eventually waiving – Andrew Bynum.
The Knicks better hope not every Laker circa 2010 has lost his touch. They desperately need Jackson to be on the mark.

Musona to Kaizer Chiefs before end of the week?

Musona could a Kaizer Chiefs player by the end of the week

Chiefs football manager Bobby Motaung previously revealed that Musona will return to the country to sign with them should there be no European offers for him by July 31.

Kaizer Chiefs could acquire Knowledge Musona's signature by the end of this week unless his parent club TSG Hoffenheim receive enticing offers from other European clubs between today (Monday) and Thursday.

AmaKhosi and Hoffenheim have agreed that the player will be allowed to return to the PSL if he doesn't get any offers by the end of this month (July).

Musona is currently undergoing rehabilitation with Hoffenheim, as he continues to recover from an ankle injury that he suffered toward the end of last season.

And therefore chances of him signing with another European club before the end of this week are slim, paving way for Chiefs to either get him on loan or buy him back.

The Zimbabwean forward scored 16 goals in all competitions for AmaKhosi last term, and although he previously expressed his desire to play in Europe, he would still welcome a move back to the Naturena outfit if nothing concrete comes up.

Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter indicated, after the Soweto Derby match on Saturday, that he hasn't given up on getting Musona back into his team, especially now that his regular players are injured, but admitted that he doesn't know the situation with the 24-year-old marksman.

Knee injury will keep Lallana out of Liverpool’s Premier League opener

www.liverpoolfc.comSuffering a lateral collateral ligament injury during Friday training, Liverpool attacking midfielder Adam Lallana will miss the start of the Premier League season, according to the club. Though no recovery timetable has been announced, surgery has been ruled out, though the former Southampton star could be facing a six-week layoff.
Per England’s Press Association, that’s the recovery time for this level of LCL injury, a period that could sideline him for the first three games of the Premier League season. Though Lallana’s recovery could beat that timetable, Liverpool expects him to miss his former club’s visit to Anfield.
From Liverpool’s website:
Liverpool have today confirmed Adam Lallana has suffered a knee injury in training and is set to miss the start of the new season.
The midfielder, who moved to Anfield from Southampton earlier this month, sustained a knock to his lateral collateral ligament during a session at the Reds’ Harvard University training base in Boston.
Lallana has been assessed by Liverpool’s medical staff and does not require surgery.
Lallana moved from Southampton to Liverpool at the beginning of the month, part of an exodus from St. Marys that’s also cost Saints head coach Mauricio Pochettino, forward Ricky Lambert and left back Luke Shaw. Defender Dejan Lovren is also expected to leave the clubs, with midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin also the subject of transfer rumors. A much-changed Southampton team will take the field at Anfield.
Lallana, part of that exodus, will witness that new team from the stands, an absence that could prove a nuisance, particularly for a team trying to replace its best player. With Luis Suárez no longer on the Reds’ books, manager Brendan Rodgers must revamp his attack, and while Lambert has been brought in to do so (with French international Loïc Remy potentially on the way), Lallana’s $42.8 million capture was the team’s biggest offseason move.
Coming off a nine-goal, six-assist season, Lallana is destined to have an impact on Liverpool, but thanks to today’s injury, that impact will not happen until after the season starts. If the normal LCL recovery time holds up, Lallana may not make debut until September.

With two strikes against rival AFC Leopards on Sunday, Ugandan forward Dan Sserunkuma became the leading goal scorer in Kenyan Premier League. This helped him take his tally to eight goals as he overcame Enock Agwanda (Sofapaka) and Edwin Oduor (Sony Sugar), who are still stuck with seven goals. Though Sserunkuma will be disappointed that his two goals were not enough to give his side victory, he will be take comfort in the fact that he managed to put in an incredible performance against AFC Leopards’ once again. The two goals means that Sserunkuma has failed to score only once against Leopards’ and will be inspired to lead his side to another title chase.

Man Utd's defensive worries grow as Rafael leaves US tour

Man Utd's defensive worries grow as Rafael leaves US tour

The Brazilian right-back is expected to play as a right wing-back in Louis van Gaal's 3-4-1-2 system next season, but has been forced to return to Carrington with a groin problem.

Manchester United defender Rafael will miss the remaining games of the club's tour of the United States after suffering a groin injury.
The Brazilian full-back, 24, picked up the injury in the lead-up to United's 3-2 win over Roma in the International Champions Cup on Saturday.
Though the extent of the problem remains unknown, it will come as a blow to manager Louis van Gaal, who will implement a wing-back system at Old Trafford next season and is short on defensive options.
The Dutchman is in the market for reinforcements following the departures of Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra, as well as the necessity of playing three central defenders in his 3-4-1-2 formation.
Rafael had been expected to take a right-sided wing-back role, with Antonio Valencia providing competition for places given the lack of a second-choice right-back.
Phil Jones and Chris Smalling had provided cover for the Brazilian last season, but they are currently two of the club's only three senior centre-backs.
Rafael will undergo treatment at the club's training base with a view to rejoining his team mates later in the summer.
"Rafael has returned to Manchester to continue treatment on the groin injury sustained in training in Denver," a statement published on the club's official website read.
"As he was unlikely to participate in the remaining tour games, returning to the Aon Training Complex affords the best overall option for his recovery in time to continue pre-season preparation when the team returns."
United have scheduled matches against Inter and Real Madrid at the ICC before a clash against Valencia at Old Trafford on August 12.
Louis van Gaal's men open their Premier League campaign at home to Swansea City four days later.

Cranes resume training

The return leg between Mauritania and Uganda in the 2015 Nations Cup pre-qualifiers has been confirmed for August 3.
This is after the Mauritanian soccer body on Wednesday communicated the development to their Ugandan counterparts.
“We have received communication from Mauritania today confirming the return leg date as Sunday 3rd August 2014 at the Stadia Olympique,” Edgar Watson, the Fufa CEO, wrote.
Meanwhile, Cranes coach Micho Sredojevic and his side resumed training at Namboole on Wednesday as they prepare for the return leg due next weekend in Nouakchott, Mauritania. Sixteen players were involved.
Uganda need to just avoid defeat or lose marginally to progress to the group stages of the 2015 Nations Cup qualifiers.
Four-time African champions Ghana, Togo and Guinea await Uganda in Group E should the Cranes successfully complete the task in Nouakchott.

France line up glamour friendlies

France have lined up a quartet of international friendlies against world champions Germany, Spain, Italy and England in their build-up to Euro 2016, French federation president Noel Le Graet announced on Thursday.
France, the 1998 World Cup winners, are hosting the European championship for a third time and will take on Spain at the Stade de France on September 4 before facing Joachim Loew's Germany, Italy and England next year, with those dates yet to be determined.
"We're going to play, Spain, Italy, Germany, England and perhaps Colombia...They will be matches of the highest level so that (France coach) Didier (Deschamps) will be ready with his team to be as prepared as possible for a competition (Euro 2016) that will be difficult," said Le Graet.
France qualify automatically for the competition in two years' time, as the host nation, and will also take part in qualifying although their results will not be taken into account.
The 1984 and 2000 European champions will play fixtures against Portugal, Denmark, Armenia and Albania after opening against Serbia on September 7 at Belgrade in Group I action.

We'll respect Baxter's decision - Khune

Bafana Bafana captain Itumeleng Khune says it would be a major coup for the national side if Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter was appointed SA Football Association (Safa) technical director.

"He is a very good coach and he is one of the best coaches I have ever worked with.He can benefit the country if he had to move."

He is still the Chiefs coach and he will decide his future, but we would like him to stay. If he had to move on we will have to respect his decision."

Balotelli-less Milan embarrassed by Olympiakos

Balotelli-less Milan embarrassed by Olympiakos

The Serie A outfit struggled without their enigmatic striker in their first competitive match under their new coach.

New AC Milan boss Filippo Inzaghi saw the size of the task ahead of him on Thursday as his side opened their North American tour with a 3-0 thrashing by Olympiakos.
The Rossoneri were without talismanic striker Mario Balotelli for the International Champions Cup clash in Toronto and his absence was keenly felt as the Greeks cruised to an impressive win.
Inzaghi succeeded Clarence Seedorf in the Milan hot-seat last month, tasked with restoring the club to their former glories but, on this early evidence, he has much to do.
Balotelli was reduced to a watching brief after his involvement in the World Cup. The former Inter and Manchester City striker has been linked with a move back to England this summer but Inzaghi stressed there should be nothing read into his omission.
He said: “Balotelli, like the other national players, just joined the team. He has had just three training sessions. I had no choice [but to play] Mattia De Sciglio and Keisuke Honda because of the small squad, but hopefully in the next few games the other national players will also see some playing time.”

For Olympiakos coach Michel, it was all smiles, as his side coped well without their top three scorers from last season: Konstantinos Mitroglou, Javier Saviola and Joel Campbell.

Alejandro Dominguez opened the scoring just past the quarter-hour mark before substitute Dimitris Diamantakos doubled their lead with a lovely touch past keeper Gabriel after some excellent build-up play.

Olympiakos saved their best for last, however, extending the lead to three through Andreas Bouchalakis, whose bullet from 30 yards soared past substitute keeper Michael Agazzi and into the top corner.
Following the match Inzaghi was surprisingly upbeat, content with excusing his team for their below-par performance.

“You have to consider we got in at two in the morning the previous night and we have been travelling the last two days from Italy to New York, so we didn’t have a chance to train,” the former stiker said.

“The players tried their hardest, but that’s the best we could do given the circumstances. We have another game on Sunday against Manchester City.

"They have had more time to train so it will be another tough game but I am just happy no one got hurt.”

The circumstances were less than ideal for Milan, but using this match as an indicator, they could be in for another long season if they fail to bring in reinforcements before the transfer window closes.

The result, however, did nothing to dampen the spirits of the large group of Milan supporters in attendance, with two fans going so far as to storm the field to take a selfie with Stephan El Shaarawy as the final whistle neared.

“I know how important these fans  around the world are for us, and I am sure that Milan will be back to the level we were at for the past 20 years when we were winning a lot, and that’s what I want to do with the team,” Inzaghi said.

Both teams return to action on Sunday, with Olympiakos taking on Liverpool in Chicago and Milan facing the reigning Premier League champions City in Pittsburgh, in what could prove to be Balotelli’s first match against his former club.

Sserunkuma rejoins Gor Mahia ahead of ‘Mashemeji derby’

Sserunkuma rejoins Gor Mahia ahead of ‘Mashemeji derby’

Ugandan hitman returns to K’Ogalo after failing to succeed in trials with Danish side HB Koge and will now be available to face rivals AFC Leopards'.

Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia have been boosted ahead of Sunday's derby following the arrival of top striker Dan Sserunkuma.
Sserunkuma jetted back to Nairobi on Friday after attending two week trials in Denmark with first Division side HB Koge.
Gor Mahia Deputy Secretary General Ronald Ngala has revealed to Goal that the player did not succeed in his trials and are glad to have him back ahead of the derby.
"Apparently things did not go well with him. However, it is great to have him back home to help in our title chase.”
On Wednesday, Gor Mahia coach Bobby Williamson expressed a desire to have the player back for the derby.
Sserunkuma has always scored against AFC Leopards' and his presence will be a major boost for the league champions. Gor Mahia will be out for revenge having lost the first 3-1 at the same venue.

Chelsea thinking about Drogba return - Mourinho

Chelsea thinking about Drogba return - Mourinho

The striker is a free agent after leaving Galatasaray and the Portuguese has admitted that the Blues are weighing up the possibility of bringing him back to Stamford Bridge.

Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Chelsea are considering re-signing Didier Drogba.

The Ivorian spent eight years at Stamford Bridge, departing in 2012 after making the difference in the Blues' Champions League final triumph against Bayern Munich, but is available again after deciding to leave Galatasaray.

Though he is now 36, Mourinho believes that he could still be devastating in the Premier League.

"We think about it," the Portuguese told reporters after being asked about Drogba's possible return.

"We want to win matches and win titles and Didier is one of the best strikers in Europe. He is still very adapted to the needs of the Premier League and we are thinking about it in a non-emotional way.

"If you bring him back it is not because he is Didier or scored the most important goal in the history of Chelsea, or because I read I need an assistant, no. If I bring him back - and the decision has to be made soon - it is because as a player he has qualities to make the team stronger.

"The team is not about the XI. It is about the different options and as an option I would not say no about the possibility.

"With Didier's profile, being a squad player I think could be important for any team and, because we know his heart is pushing him to where he feels he belongs and because our boss [Roman Abramovich] has this big feeling towards him, we are thinking about the possibility.

"Mr Abramovich is very intelligent and he feels that people belong to the club. We feel that Didier belongs to us. Is he coming back as a player one more year or a couple more years? Let's see."

Di Maria voted Goal readers' midfielder of the season

Di Maria voted Goal readers' midfielder of the season

The Argentine came out on top in our poll of the best midfielders from 2013-14 as part of the countdown to the Goal 50.

Angel Di Maria has topped Goal's poll of the best midfielders of the 2013-14 season as we continue the countdown to the Goal 50.

The Argentine was reinvented in a deeper role by Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid and thrived, putting in a man of the match performance in his side's historic Champions League final victory over city rivals Atletico.

And Di Maria picked some 23.1 per cent of the vote, just ahead of Yaya Toure, who led Manchester City to the Premier League title and garnered 19.9%.

The next highest in the poll is Di Maria's Madrid colleague Luka Modric, who landed 11.1% after a superb season at the Santiago Bernabeu.

In fourth was Aaron Ramsey, who enjoyed a wonderful year for Arsenal, scoring a dramatic extra-time winner in the FA Cup final to end the Gunners' trophy drought. His exploits saw him backed by 8.5%.

He had Juventus star Arturo Vidal breathing down his neck, though, the Chilean picking up 8.4% of the vote, while Toni Kroos, who won a move from Bayern Munich to Real Madrid this summer, is next with 7%.

See how Di Maria fared in the Goal 50 when the full rankings, including the winner, are announced on July 28.

World Cup not the end of my Germany journey - Low

World Cup not the end of my Germany journey - Low

The coach says he will stay until at least the end of his contract in 2016 and insists he never seriously entertained resigning despite World Cup success in Brazil.

Joachim Low has confirmed he will remain head coach of Germany in the wake of leading the team to World Cup glory this summer.
The 54-year-old led his nation to victory in Brazil after guiding them to three successive major tournaments where they had at least reached the last four.
Low admitted that he needed time to gather his thoughts in the aftermath of such a successful summer but, having extended his contract to 2016 before the tournament, had no serious intention to step aside from the Germany hotseat.
“I did not think about it for one second," he told Germany football association's official website. "I was doing what was agreed upon before the World Cup: that we would sit down and analyse the tournament, as we have done after every tournament.
"I had not extended my contract until 2016 just to terminate it early. But I have been very aware that all the developments after the World Cup could create some new dynamics.
"I needed some time to calm down and to get a hold of my emotions. But I cannot think of anything better than continuing to work with this team, to lead it to Euro 2016 in France.
"I am as motivated as I was on my first day. The World Cup 2014 was the highlight so far but it will not be my conclusion."
Low also bemoaned the international retirement of captain Philipp Lahm, whom has been a pivotal part of the Germany team for nearly a decade, but accepts the Bayern Munich veteran's decision to go out on a high.
"From a footballing perspective his retirement is a big loss, but also from a personal point of view," he said.
"I could not have imagined a better captain. He signified, led and represented the national team in an excellent way. But I respect and accept his decision. Philipp has worked for this success for 10 years. We can only thank him."

Drogba, Yaya & Ivory Coast must restore pride to Africa

Drogba, Yaya & Ivory Coast must restore pride to Africa

Cote d'Ivoire stars have attracted more attention than they bargained for in Brazil - now king Drogba leads the charge as they prepare to face Colombia.

He poked his head between the leaves of the tree, glancing nervously to either side.

To his right was the Ivorian team hotel, to the left their training pitch. Directly beneath him was a 25-foot drop if the branch he was standing on failed to hold. As he glanced left Gervinho lashed home a fine volley and Yaya Toure, who was on the opposing side in the training session, lambasted his team-mates.

The Japanese journalist smiled, took out his notebook and jotted something down.

The strangest thing about that scene is that it is a far from isolated incident.

Ivory Coast's build-up to the tournament has been dominated by subterfuge and incidents, principally with the Japanese media desperate to glean information ahead of their game last Saturday.

It clearly did them no good, as Didier Drogba inspired a 2-1 victory for his side in a fine match.

But it teaches us about the Ivorians and the way they are perceived over here in Brazil. They are, in short, kind of a big deal.

This, after all, is the tournament where they could finally make their mark on the major stage, and certainly it is the last chance for many of their team to do so.

For a start, Drogba, Kolo Toure, Didier Zokora and Boubacar Barry – who have 413 caps between them – are all aged 33 or over and are unlikely to have another chance to shine on the biggest stage.

But there is talent below them. Yaya Toure's qualities are clear, while Wilfried Bony and Gervinho are coming into this tournament off the back of hugely impressive seasons at club level.

Still, though, Drogba is the king. He is desperate to perform at this tournament after two previous World Cups ended in bitter disappointment. True, they were in fiendishly difficult groups – they were in the same pool as Argentina and Holland in 2006, before being paired with Brazil and Portugal four years later – but they failed and this is the opportunity for redemption.

Drogba's start to the tournament – Ivory Coast were a goal down when he came onto the field in the 62nd minute and a goal ahead four minutes later – is nothing short of inspirational.

And as they face Colombia on Thursday it is clear his team know the value of their talisman.

“For us, Drogba is more than a captain,” explains manager Sabri Lamouchi. “We take advantage of his experience, his professionalism. He is an example for young people who arrive in this team.

“When you see his name, the fact that he is an icon, not only as an Ivorian but also as an African and globally, the Japanese perhaps saw his entry as an additional weapon.

“Others were able to find more space and we took advantage. I did not expect anything else. He is a champion, a competitor. I know it, the squad knows it. We need him, he needs us.”

But even champions know they cannot defeat time. Drogba's performances in his latter years as a player have still been extraordinary – think Chelsea's Champions League victory in 2012 – but he will not get another opportunity like this.

So, does that mean extra pressure? Not according to Kolo Toure.

“There is no more pressure on us,” said the Liverpool man.

“There are experienced players here. We are very concentrated and will play each game without regrets.

“It is the third time we have been in the World Cup so we know now that if we play a better team we just have to play (and make sure we have no) regrets.”

To do so they will need Kolo's brother, Yaya, at his very best. He has struggled with knee and hamstring injuries and was a huge doubt for the opening game. The 90 minutes were exhausting.

“I would have liked to have relieved him of a few minutes in the last game,” said Lamouchi.

“Unfortunately the result didn't allow me to. He finished tired with pains everywhere. This is normal. These are his first 90 minutes after trying all the efforts he has provided to recover from his injury.” That was obvious from spending a couple of days at their training base in the rainforest around three hours north of Sao Paulo.

It is completely isolated, the nearest town's greatest claim to fame being that it provides mineral water to the rest of Sao Paulo state.

It also offers a number of extreme sports options, and while I was there two paragliders circled overhead during training.

Security, growing suspicious, scurried around trying to discover who they were.

But the overall feeling was one of calm, of an acceptance that the time for talking is over and Ivory Coast must prove that their golden generation really is as good as we have all been told.

They have started well, and if they continue to do so they will face either Germany, Portugal, Ghana or USA in the last 16. Then we will fund out what they are truly made of without having to resort to climbing trees to do so.

Arsenal take Barcelona youngster Spanoudakis on trial

Arsenal take Barcelona youngster Spanoudakis on trial

The 15-year-old featured for the Gunners' under-18 team as they defeated Lincoln City on Tuesday and the club are continuing to monitor his progress with the youth side.

Arsenal have taken Barcelona youngster Georgios Spanoudakis on trial.

Spanoudakis, a 15-year-old midfielder, has reportedly attracted interest from a number of Europe's top clubs having impressed during his time with the Liga giants, whom he joined when he was just nine.

Arsenal are keen to sign Spanoudakis permanently and negotiations with Barcelona over a prospective deal are understood to be continuing.

The youngster made a winning start to his spell in north London, featuring as the club's under-18 side defeated Lincoln City 1-0 on Tuesday, with Ben Sheaf on target.

And should he put pen to paper he will follow in the footsteps of six players - most notably Cesc Fabregas - by electing to swap Camp Nou for the Emirates.

Manager Arsene Wenger has already persuaded one Barcelona star to move to Arsenal this summer, Alexis Sanchez joining in a €40 million deal, while Mathieu Debuchy also headed to north London from Newcastle.

Zaha keen to impress Van Gaal at Manchester United

Zaha keen to impress Van Gaal at Manchester United

The former Crystal Palace winger is desperate to make his mark at Old Trafford, having returned from a loan spell at Cardiff, and is keen to start with the club's pre-season tour

Wilfried Zaha is hoping to impress new manager Louis van Gaal, having returned to Manchester United following his loan spell at Cardiff.

Sir Alex Ferguson's last signing before his retirement, Zaha joined United in a £15 million deal from Crystal Palace in January 2013 and was immediately loaned back to the Eagles, helping them secure their promotion to the Premier League.

However, he struggled to make his mark under David Moyes – making just three appearances before his move to Wales – and he is now keen to prove his worth on the club's pre-season tour of America, with the Dutchman having replaced the beleaguered Scot.

"It's great to be back," Zaha told United's official website. "There's a nice vibe, everybody's working hard and we're looking forward to the new season.

"Going to Cardiff was a really good experience for me. I managed to get quite a few games under my belt at Premier League level, which was good, and I feel like I've come back a better player.

"I've realised there are things about my game I need to work on and concentrate on and I know this is the best place to be if I want to improve. I really want to make myself a better player."

United will play LA Galaxy, Roma, Inter and Real Madrid during their tour and Zaha is confident he will be given a chance to show his talent as Van Gaal evaluates United's squad ahead of the 2014-15 season.

"For me, I definitely feel like this is a clean slate," Zaha said. "All I'm trying to do is impress the new manager and get into his squad. All I can do is give my all. There's a new manager and I want to make sure I show him what I can do.

"United are a big club so we need strong opposition and we've got that on pre-season this year. There's no doubt we'll be tested on tour and that's a good thing. It should prepare us well for the season ahead. I’m really looking forward to being involved and I can't wait to face those teams."

Aurier undergoes Paris Saint-Germain medical ahead of €10 million move

Aurier undergoes Paris Saint-Germain medical ahead of €10 million move

The Cote d'Ivoire international, previously linked with Arsenal, underwent a series of physical tests early on Wednesday ahead of his proposed switch to the Ligue 1 champions.

Toulouse defender Serge Aurier is set to complete his transfer to Paris Saint-Germain after undergoing a medical with the French champions early on Wednesday.

The Cote d'Ivoire right-back had previously been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal as they sought a replacement for Bacary Sagna, who has joined Manchester City.

However, the Premier League outfit eventually opted to sign Mathieu Debuchy from Newcastle United, allowing PSG to steal a march on the signing of the 21-year-old, who is expected to cost up to €10 million.

With Chistophe Jallet set to leave the Ligue 1 champions, Laurent Blanc was keen to add a new defender to their squad to fight it out with Gregory van der Wiel for the position of right-back.

Aurier came through the ranks of the Lens youth academy and joined Toulouse in the summer of 2012. He had since developed into a key player at the Stadium Municipal outfit, making close to 100 official appearances.

The defender was part of the Cote d'Ivoire World Cup squad that exited in the group stages and impressed in the 2-1 win over Japan as he set up both of his side's goals.

Messi considered Arsenal move

Barcelona forward Lionel Messi considered a move to Arsenal two months ago. The Argentine discussed a possible move to the Gunners with Cesc Fabregas in May as he is a big fan of Arsene Wenger.

Barcelona agree €20m deal for Mathieu

Barcelona agree €20m deal for Mathieu

The Frenchman has finally sealed his move to the Camp Nou side after spending the past five seasons at Valencia.

Barcelona have confirmed that they have reached a deal that will see them sign Jeremy Mathieu from Valencia on a four-year deal for a fee of €20 million.

The Catalans were looking to sign a new centre-back following the retirement of Carles Puyol at the end of the 2013-14 campaign and they have long been pursuing 30-year-old Mathieu.

After protracted negotations, Barca have finally secured the signing of the Frenchman, who will have a €50m buyout clause in his new contract after becoming one of the most expensive players at the age of 30 or over in history.

"Barcelona and Valencia have reached an agreement for the transfer of the French player Jeremy Mathieu," a statement on the club's official website reads.

"Jeremy Mathieu will sign a contract with Barcelona for the next four seasons plus an optional season more.

"The cost of the transfer is €20 million and the buyout clause will be €50m."

Mathieu started his professional career with Sochaux and also wore the Toulouse jersey before joining Valencia in the summer of 2009.

The defender had since made 177 appearances in all competitions for the Mestalla side, scoring seven goals in the process.

Suarez has been treated like a murderer, says Iago Aspas

Suarez has been treated like a murderer, says Iago Aspas

The Spanish attacker feels the new Barcelona signing does not deserve the four-month ban from all footballing activity for his World Cup bite.

Sevilla attacker Iago Aspas has slammed Fifa's treatment of his former Liverpool team-mate Luis Suarez, claiming the new Barcelona signing has been punished "like a murderer".

Suarez was not only handed a nine-game international suspension and a hefty fine, but was also banned from taking part in any football related activity for four months prior to his €88 million switch to Camp Nou.

The Uruguay international's punishment prevented Barcelona from staging an official unveiling of the player and Aspas feels Fifa is treating Suarez like a criminal rather than a footballer.

"They are treating Luis like a murderer and not like a footballer," Aspas told Cadena Cope.

"I understand his nine-game international ban because of the incidents that took place in the past.

"But the rest of the sanction, which doesn't allow Barcelona to present him to the media and fans, is too much in my opinion."

The 27-year-old Suarez will not be allowed to make his Barcelona debut until October 26, when his ban comes to an end.

Kenya FA: We will replace Amrouche

Kenya FA: We will replace Amrouche

Kenya Federation have revealed to Goal that they will hire a new head coach for Harambee Stars’ if latest appeal on Adel Amrouche’s ban is not lifted.

Football Kenya Federation have revealed they will get a new coach for Harambee Stars’ if their latest appeal on Adel Amrouche’s one year ban is not lifted.
Kenya FA President Sam Nyamweya has told Goal that they will appeal against decision by Confederation of African Football (Caf) to ban Amrouche for a period of one year.

“The ban is very severe and we intend to lodge an appeal within shortest time possible,” Nyamweya said, adding, "if Caf sticks to their guns that the ban stays…then we have no option but get a replacement.
“We are in the middle of a serious Africa Cup of Nations Cup qualifier campaign and need a substantive coach to handle the team. Incase our appeal is rejected, we will have to look for another alternative,” he revealed.
Nyamweya declined to confirm who they are considering even though reports confirmed that Gor Mahia coach Bobby Williamson is favorite to take over the position. However, a source in FKF said they have began talks with Williamson in a bid to bring him on board.
“We are looking at various coaches and Williamson is among those we are talking to. He understands the local league and players and will be a perfect replacement for Amrouche,” said our source.
Amrouche was suspended by the African body after being found guilty of spitting on a match official during Kenya’s African Cup of Nations qua, lifier against Comoros in Moroni. He had earlier been slapped with a two match suspension pending submission of the matter to Caf disciplinary board.
The board under chairmanship of Raymond Hack from South Africa, had it's sitting last Thursday at Caf headquarters in Cairo where the decision was finally made to ban the Kenyan coach. In its ruling obtained by Goal, the board found Amrouche guilty of breaching article 129 (c) of its rules which provides for a 12 match ban to anyone spitting at a match official.
"The suspension is effective from first day of notification namely July 20, 2014,” a letter confirming the suspension and copied to Football Kenya Federation (FKF) read in part.
The letter further states that this decision will be forwarded to World governing body Fifa which may extend the sanction internationally meaning that Amrouche cannot coach any team anywhere in the world during the period of suspension.
"The decision can be contested before Caf appeals board. The party intending to appeal shall announce this intention in writing within three days of notification of decision," the letter from Caf adds.
Kenya FA had earlier appealed against the two match suspension slapped on Amrouche by arguing that the coach did not spat on the match official and accused the official of lying in it's report.

City Stars 0-2 AFC Leopards’: Ingwe warm up for ‘Mashemeji derby’ with emphatic victory

City Stars 0-2 AFC Leopards’: Ingwe warm up for ‘Mashemeji derby’ with emphatic victory

Goals from Noah Wafula and Nigerian import Austine Ikenna propelled Ingwe to winning ways and set them ready for Sunday’s battle against Gor Mahia.

AFC Leopards’ roared to an emphatic 2-0 victory over Nairobi City Stars in a mid-week Kenyan Premier League match played at Nyayo Stadium on Wednesday.
Goals from Noah Wafula and Nigerian import Austine Ikenna propelled Ingwe to winning ways and end a run of four matches without registering victory.
And the win comes as a morale booster for Dutch coach Pieter De Jong and the team in general ahead of Sunday’s ‘Mashemeji derby’ against Gor Mahia at the same venue.
De Jong could not hide his joy after ending a run of poor results and promised Gor Mahia to be ready for a tough battle on Sunday. “We needed victory and I thank God we have won today (Wednesday).
“Furthermore, what impressed me is the display with which we got the win. The team played well in all departments and we should have won by a wider margin. All in all, we have maximum points and are now setting our eyes on Sunday’s derby.
“Against Gor Mahia…we must win. We beat them in first leg 3-1 and want to complete a double over them. We look sharp now going forward and they should anticipate a bruising battle," De Jong told Goal.
De Jong effected changes to Ingwe’s starting eleven benching goalkeeper Wycilife Kasaya and striker Jacob Keli. He introduced Noah Wafula and Martin Musalia and it was Wafula who scored the opening goal in the 5th minute.
Martin Imbalambala then set up Nigerian Austine Ikkena to head home the second goal in 15th minute and from there on, AFC Leopards’ looked the most dangerous side.
Humphrey Mieno should have made it 3-0 in 19th minute but after controlling well a cross from Ugandan Mudde Musa, he shot wide with keeper Fred Majani out of his line.
Mieno, who AFC Leopards’ signed from Sofapaka, once again came close three minutes later but could not beat Majani, who saved his shot. Wafula almost scored a brace in 28th minute but Majani was once again in top form foiling his attempt.
In particular, Mieno and Mudde played a vital role for Ingwe in midfield by creating several scoring chances which went begging. Before half-time, Ingwe should have scored more than four goals with Mieno watching his thunderbolt sail over the bar in 35th minute.

Vince Lia to miss Premier League friendlies

Vince Lia to miss Premier League friendlies

The reliable midfielder will play no part in the high-profile games against English opposition, although his Spanish colleague is set to return to action.

A ongoing hamstring problem means Wellington Phoenix midfielder Vince Lia won't play against English Premier League clubs West Ham and Newcastle United next week.

The 29-year-old Australian has been managing the injury throughout pre-season and coach Ernie Merrick confirmed he would not be fit enough for the matches in Auckland and Wellington which form part of the Football United Tour that also includes fellow A-League club Sydney FC.

"He was certainly looking forward to it. But he understands," Merrick said of the decision.

"He's the first to support all the players that will be playing.

"He will be with us and part of it. He'll be sitting on the bench and we'll include him as much as possible. It's just the nature of professional football."

While Lia's experience will be missed, Merrick has last year's Phoenix player of the year, Albert Riera, who will also play for the All Stars next month, new signing Alex Gorrin, Alex Rufer, Jason Hicks and Matt Ridenton to call on in midfield. They have all had game time in the recent friendly matches against local Wellington clubs.

Undoubtedly though, the English sides will provide a far, far sterner test - despite Newcastle not bringing their star players.

Merrick said he would be looking at the team's overall performance rather than focusing on the results. Wellington play West Ham in Auckland on Wednesday - the day after Sydney take on Newcastle in Dunedin. The Phoenix then play Newcastle in Wellington in a double-header on Saturday that will also see Sydney play West Ham.

"It's great preparation for the A-League. It's a measuring stick for some of the up-and-coming players as well that are pretty keen to go down that track to maybe play at that level," Merrick said.

"We just want to put on a really good display and entertaining football."

To that end, Merrick won't "park the bus". But he acknowledged his side won't be able to press as high up the field on defence as they attempted to do last season, with mixed results.

"You're taking a bit of a risk if you try and close down EPL sides in their own back third because you're pretty stretched," Merrick said.

"So we will be a bit more conservative in our defensive set-up but we won't change too much else."

Gombe United sign 7, drop 9 players for NPFL second stanza

The Desert Scorpions have confirmed the signing of seven new players and the drop of nine others ahead of the league second stanza resumption on July 20.

Gombe United have announced the signing of seven players to reinforce their squad ahead of the start of the second stanza of the 2013/2014 Nigeria Professional Football League season. According to a statement signed by the club media officer Tanimu Umar, the signing of new players was in bid to ensure the team retain its place in the elite division at the end of the season.
The Desert Scorpions have lately experienced various restructuring in the technical crew with the departure of Belgian tactician Maurice Cooreman and the anouncement of former Super Eagles gaffer Augustine Eguavoen as Technical Adviser and Chief Coach Oyekale Oyedunni.
"In preparation for the second round of the 2013/14 Nigerian Premier League season, Gombe United Football Club has finalized the signing of seven new players," the statement read.

Juwon Oshaniwa: Echiejile's absence challenged me

Juwon Oshaniwa: Echiejile's absence challenged me

The Super Eagles defender has said his brilliant performance at the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil was due to the fact he needed to confound the critics who claimed he would fail

Nigeria international Juwon Oshaniwa has revealed that his gleaming performance at the 2014 Fifa World Cup was in response to the barrage of criticism that trailed his inclusion in the 23-man list.
Oshaniwa eventually became the Super Eagles’ first choice in the left-back position in Brazil following injury to AS Monaco’s Elderson Echiejile, which ruled him out of the tournament.
The 23-year-old played all four matches as Nigeria reached the second round for the first time in 16 years.
He stated that self-belief was responsible for his commendable performance as responsibility beckoned on him following Echiejile’s blackout.
"It feels good and also a great achievement putting smiles on the faces of critics. Well, I felt so bad that my friend [Echiejile] was ruled out of the competition despite his contributions to the team’s qualification for the tournament,” Oshaniwa told Goal.
"Knowing that responsibility of replacing him beckoned on me, I had to put myself together, take charge to put smiles on the faces of Nigerians."
The Ashdod of Israel star also revealed that he is not in a hurry to move to another club not unmindful of several offers coming from other European clubs.
"For every player on earth, there is always a desire for a greener pasture and I can tell you that mine is not an exception.

"I have set some targets for myself which I am working towards achieving because I'm sure the future is very bright for me.

"Sure, I have received some offers from other clubs and that I won’t disclose until everything materializes.

“Right now, I'm with my parents to share some moments with them and also to receive their blessings before preparing for the new league season,” he concluded.

Liverpool edge ahead of Tottenham in Ben Davies race

Liverpool edge ahead of Tottenham in Ben Davies race

The Swansea City left-back's preference is to be reunited with Brendan Rodgers at Anfield this summer, with the Reds prepared to meet the Welsh club's £10 million asking price.

Liverpool have edged ahead of Tottenham in the race to sign Swansea City left-back Ben Davies, Goal understands.

Though Spurs are understood to have agreed a fee and are prepared to pay more for the youngster up front, the Reds are ready to meet the Swans' £10 million asking price.

Davies's preferred destination is Anfield, with the prospect of Champions League football a big draw as well as working with former Swansea boss Brendan Rodgers in a team who nearly won the Premier League in 2013-14.

Tottenham's interest in the left-back, who has had the better of his battle with Neil Taylor for a place in the Swans' first team, was confirmed by the Welsh club's chairman, Huw Jenkins, earlier in July.

But Spurs, who are the only Premier League team yet to complete a signing so far this summer, are likely to be gazumped by big-spending Liverpool. The Londoners are continuing their attempts to persuade Davies to move to White Hart Lane but fear that even a guaranteed starting role will not be enough to change his mind.

With the return of Champions League football to Anfield and the £70m sale of Luis Suarez to Barcelona, Rodgers has already spent close to £60m on Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert, Emre Can and Lazar Markovic.

The pursuit of Davies is part of a defensive recruitment that also includes a move for Southampton centre-back Dejan Lovren.
