Tusker coach concedes Gor Mahia are favourites

Tusker coach Francis Kimanzi now says holders Gor Mahia have highest chance of retaining title followed closely by second-placed Sofapaka.

Following their 2-1 defeat at the hands of Ulinzi Stars on Thursday, Tusker coach Francis Kimanzi now says holders Gor Mahia have highest chance of winning league trophy, followed very closely by second-placed Sofapaka.
“Considering their run in previous matches and games they have remaining, Gor Mahia have greatest chance to defend the title, but Sofapaka too are eager to prove a point so it will be a very tough race this year."
“The two currently have fairly equal players' depth. Whoever will be able to maintain focus in remaining matches will be the one to win it because once you drop points there is very little time remaining to correct the damage. We shall continue to fight until the last minute."
Kimanzi admitted that dropping all three points in their mid-week match against the soldiers had knocked the wind out of brewers’ sail.
The loss stretched Tusker’s winless run to five matches and the former league leaders now find themselves six points off the pace of table topping Gor Mahia with five rounds of matches remaining.
“It has been a very depressing two months. We have dropped several points we should not have and that has been very disappointing for the boys. Thursday’s loss leaves us with very slim chances of winning the trophy,” Kimanzi conceded to kpl.co.ke.
The brewers began the 2014 season on a high note after Kimanzi replaced Robert Matano as head coach, and put out an eight-match unbeaten streak before falling 4-2 to second-placed Sofapaka at the Kenyatta Stadium in April.
The 10-time champions have, however, been a pale shadow of themselves in recent times failing to win in five straight matches with just three goals scored.
And they still have to face Thika United and fellow title contenders Sofaopaka in their remaining matches. The brewers have not managed a single win over any of the two teams over the past two years.
“In the beginning every team has an equal chance at the trophy and we have recorded better results earlier on in the season. However, with matches we have remaining and the fact that we walked empty handed from Thursday’s game, we have dropped considerably and it will be tough catching up."
The 2012 champions will resume league activity with an away match against seventh-placed Mathare United, take on Muhoroni and KRA before finishing off against Thika United and 2009 champions Sofapaka.
