Despite the 26-year-old's impressive Old Trafford debut and opening goal against QPR, the Dutchman believes the winger could have been more effective in possession.
The €75 million summer signing from Real Madrid scored a free kick on his Old Trafford debut and set up Juan Mata for United's fourth goal in the 58th minute.
Di Maria also played a pivotal role in a number of United's attacks before he was brought off with eight minutes remaining, but Van Gaal believes the 26-year-old could have been better in possession.
"When you make three goals and score the first yourself then you cannot play badly," the Dutchman told reporters.
"But he had a lot of unnecessary losses [of possession], so he can do better.
"It's nearly impossible to do better when you score one goal and help make three others, but I'm analysing the game and I see things we can improve on."
