Ingwe rallied from 2-0 down to send Tusker crushing out of the knock out competition and set up semis date with Sofapaka who dumped out AP.
AFC Leopards’ displayed one of the best turn arounds ever to eliminate Tusker and remain on course to defending GOtv Shield title after a 3-2 win at City Stadium on Sunday.Ingwe were trailing 2-0 but a penalty from striker Austine Ikenna reduced the arrears and an own goal from Tusker's Llyod Wahome put the match at 2-2 before Humphrey Mieno struck home the winner with six minutes to the final whistle.
Tusker had scored an earlier goal through Khalid Aucho before Jesse Were made it 2-0. It was the best ever win for Ingwe, who will now face Sofapaka in semi-finals of the cup competition.
AFC Leopards Dutch coach Pieter De Jongh could not hide his joy after watching the amazing comeback. “Very rare you can find a team coming from two goals down to win against a very strong side. It was an amazing result. We battled hard even when we were down and this is the kind of outcome you expect.
“We fought for every ball and my players remained composed in every move they created. We conceded a very early goal and this disorganized our plans. I asked my players to keep working hard because I was sure that something will come out of it.
“We now face Sofapaka in semi-finals. It will be a tough contest. I think it will be very similar to what we experienced today (against Tusker) but we will strive to retain this trophy.”
Tusker coach Francis Kimanzi could not believe how they let slip a commanding lead. “We took control of the game from onset and were 2-0 up. We did not concentrate fully on our performance. It was down to who defends and attacks well and when we conceded an own goal…we were not going to survive.
“We must now put our energy on chasing for league title. With five rounds of matches to go, we still have an open chance but only if other title contenders drops points. That is what we are praying for. It is very sad and discouraging to exit this tournament this way.”
AFC Leopards’ will now face Batoto ba Mungu, who earlier in the day had beaten Administration Police 3-1 to qualify. Ingwe will be seeking to defend the title they won last year after beating rivals Gor Mahia in the final.
