Mathare United 0-1 Tusker: Brewers’ recover to remain on course

Brewers’ have maintained pace with the leading pack on Kenyan Premier League standings after registering a slim but vital win over ‘Slum Boys’.

Tusker FC returned to winning ways after edging out Mathare United 1-0 in a closely fought Kenyan Premier League match played at Nyayo Stadium on Saturday. The brewer’, who had lost 1-2 to Ulinzi Stars last week, recovered to collect maximum points courtesy of Andrew Tololwa’s first half strike to reach 45 points, three less leaders Gor Mahia, who were due to face Nairobi City Stars in another top match at the same venue.
It was Tololwa's third goal of the season and he has already repaid massive confidence showed to him by Tusker coach Francis Kimanzi after an unimpressive run with United.
Tololwa began the move towards goal after he attempted to pick out Jesse Were with a low shot but United goalkeeper Robert Mboya was quick off his line only that his clearance ended up at Tololwa's feet and he just tapped home the only goal of the match.
It is a result that left Kimanzi impressed by display his boys showed after a poor run of results. "It was a good game. One of two halves and exciting for fans to watch. Everyone was under pressure but a good one for that matter. We have always been impressive on the pitch only that the results have not been there to show for it.”
United coach Stanley Okumbi said his boys did not utilise their chances especially in a second half they dominated. "They dominated in first half and got one chance from which they scored. It was our game in second half but we did not use our chances.”
A good midfield combination in first half should have put Tusker ahead early on. Khalid Aucho seemed to have released Jesse Were with a perfect ball only for the latter to shoot wide.
United fought back after Tete Olesu picked out Harrison Mwende only for Duncun Ochieng’ in goal to thwart the effort. Tusker rested injured Jesse Were for Clifford Alwanga as second half kicked-off while Tete Olesu was rested for Emmanuel Ibe but not before he had nearly scored for United with a hard shot that Ochieng stopped on the line.
Tusker managed to keep their cool to come off with maximum points as their massive experience frustrated their opponents.
