Rumors continue to link Edinson Cavani with a move to the Premier League as “El Matador” is unhappy at Paris Saint-Germain.
Cavani, 27, was reportedly a target for Liverpool and Arsenal all summer long but both of those teams plumped for cheaper options in Mario Balotelli and Danny Welbeck. That worked out for Arsenal, but Liverpool’s offensive struggles continue and bringing in Cavani would change that drastically.
According to reports from the Daily Star in England, Cavani is unhappy at being restricted to playing out wide and wants to move to a club where he can be the focal point of the attack.
Manchester United have also been linked with a move for the Uruguayan forward but with Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie, Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao around, it seems like he would face the same problem he currently has at PSG: game time in his favored position. Cavani started up front for Les Parisiens on Tuesday in Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s absence and PSG beat Barcelona 3-2 in their Champions League group stage game. Yet that panache and swagger we are so used to seeing from him wasn’t present as his slow start to the season campaign continues with four goals in 11 games so far.
Out of Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool, the latter seems like the most likely destination for Cavani.
Liverpool’s offensive problems continued this week as they fired a blank in Basel on Wednesday during their UCL defeat and the Mario Balotelli experiment has, so far, failed. The only stumbling block may be the price, as the Reds already spent all of the $128 million they received for Luis Suarez this summer, and then some, on new players. However, if they can pick up Cavani and play him in his preferred central role, it could be the difference between them finishing in the top four and finishing woefully outside it.
With Cavani’s sparkle diminishing at PSG by the day, the powerful forward is apparently desperate to get out of the Parc des Princes. Will a Premier League club splash the cash to get him across the English Channel?
