Paul Kiongera scored for the bankers as they moved level on 18 points with Nairobi City Stars though they have a game in hand against Gor Mahia FC.
Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) remained on course to escape relegation with another 1-0 win over Kenya Revenue Authority in a mid-week league match played at City Stadium on Friday. On loan striker Paul Kiongera scored for the bankers in first half as they moved level on 18 points with fellow strugglers Nairobi City Stars though they have a game in hand against Gor Mahia.
It was a third straight lose for the tax men, who now slip to sixth place on the log after amassing 33 points from 23 matches.
Kiongera, who is headed to Tanzanian giants Simba SC, headed home the all important goal in 15th minute to give his side three important points and raised their hopes of beating relegation.
Apart from scoring Kiongera, was rightly named man of the match and he could have easily scored four goals. From the 25th minute, it was Kiongera up against Philip Odhiambo in KRA goal. First, he punched out Kiongera's header for a corner in the 25th minute. Five minutes later, Kiongera's pin-point header was put out again and in the 35th minute it was the same story.
The last goal bound effort from Kiongera came in the 40th minute but this time it was a long range shot that troubled Odhiambo in goal but ended up in a corner for the bankers. Kiongera was delighted by his performance and expressed confidence that his team-mates will beat off relegation even in his absence.
"This was an important win for us and gives the players plenty of confidence. If we can maintain same trend, there is no way we will not survive against relegation,” Kiongera told Goal.
Regarding the missed chances he said: “It is a bit difficult to score from a header because you need much more effort."
The first minutes of the game were fairly balanced before Paul Kiongera changed matters in favour of KCB. The second half was a battle which saw KRA push hard for an equalizer but all their efforts never materialized handing KCB maximum points at final whistle.
