Ulinzi Stars coach Robert Matano defends selection of Jairus Adira as goalkeeper of the year and insists he deserves to be in Goal Kenya Award list.
Ulinzi Stars coach Robert Matano as defended selection of Jairus Adira as goalkeeper of the year even as he pointed out that the player deserves to be in Goal Kenya Player of the Year list. The Chemelil Sugar custodian was named the best goalkeeper during this year's Footballer of the Year awards amid protests. But Matano has come to his defense.
"By all accounts he deserved to be the top goalkeeper and he is also on my list for Goal player of the year. He has been very consistent and also conceded least number of goals. For goalkeepers this is what is considered when rewarding them," he told Goal.
Matano"s other choice for the award is Tusker midfielder Osborne Monday. "He was very influential for the brewers this season. It was a great display by a player who just a year earlier was struggling on the pitch.”
The Tusker midfielder made short list for best player in 2014 and he was also named in the Goal player of the year by his coach Francis Kimanzi. Gor Mahia defender David 'Calabr' Owino also makes it in this list according to Matano on account of consistency at both club level and at national team.
"Once again he was very consistent for both club and country and was always at the top of his game. He showed discipline on the pitch.”
Another player Matano puts on the list is Sofapaka midfielder Anthony Ekhalie Ndolo. "He is the perfect midfielder scoring and creating assists. It is very rare for a midfielder to score nine goals but he did and that makes his extra special.” Ndolo was named best midfielder and best player in 2014.
He believes that Kenyan captain Victor Wanyama's form for Southampton puts him on the least as well. "When you look at his performance, it is obvious that he has grown in his confidence and is now a key player. It is rare for a player in his first season to show such kind of performance."
